What is EQ?
EQ stands for Emotional Quotient. It
is the ability to recognise, understand our own emotions and the emotions of
others. It is sometimes referred to as Emotional Intelligence (EI)
Why is being an EQ School so
important?
Pastoral care at our school is of high
priority for both children and adults. At Birchington we believe every child
should be encouraged to reach their full academic potential in a caring
environment. We believe that the
development of EQ and other personal and social skills are key to a child's
development and enhances other areas of learning. It's not just what
you do at Birchington that counts but how you go about
doing it!
How do we develop and enhance EQ at
Birchington Primary?
-
We teach PSHE through the SEAL
(Social Emotional Aspects of Learning). Children learn to explore both their
own, and others’ emotions through a range of whole school topics including
‘Good to be me’ and ‘Changes’
-
Our Pastoral team consists of
Family Liaison Officer and Learning Behaviour Mentors . All are always on hand to
support our children’s emotional development and well being
-
We have a staff ‘EQ and Well- being
Working Party’ who meet termly to discuss and develop ways to enhance EQ
-
We strive to ensure our environment
is attractive and offers all children the opportunity to develop their social
and emotional skills. For example, our wigwam village, mushroom circles and our
sheltered pagoda all promote speaking, listening and social
skills
-
We also have a number
of inside areas that promote emotional well being such as our
'Rainforest Room' in Year 6, the 'Red Room'. in Year 5 and our
new Key Stage 1' Rose Room' which is used for nurture groups
-
We also
have tailored social skills and
self-esteem groups which give additional support and guidance to small groups of
children.
