ASSESSMENT
Assessment of RE takes place in line with the school’s Monitoring and Assessment Policy and is related to the expectations of the Kent Agreed Syllabus.
At Birchington CE Primary School class teachers use regular and robust formative assessment to assess the children’s learning in RE lessons. This method of assessment in RE recognises the range of skills and attitudes which the subject seeks to develop. This assessment is then used to inform future planning. These assessments are made against the learning question, and are founded in the success criteria for that lesson.
Lessons begin with a Learning Question. In Years 5 and 6 pupils are asked to write down their initial answers to this learning question. In lower years, this is done as a whole class. At the end of the lesson this learning question is revisited and pupils either write down or verbally share their answers. By doing this, teachers are able to assess pupils’ knowledge and understanding in each RE lesson and their progress over time.
Pupils also self-assess their own learning each lesson using the success criteria as a support to guide their evaluation.
At the end of each term teachers record an overall assessment for each child. These assessments are completed on an online spreadsheet. The Spirituality Hub Driver is able to use these assessments to carry out detailed analysis of RE attainment across the school. They are able to compare and analyse data from classes, year groups, boys/girls, SEND pupils, vulnerable groups etc.
At the end of the school year, detailed information about a child’s progress, knowledge, understanding and attainment is reported to parents/carers on the end of year written reports.
