Art and Design Subject Information

Art and Design forms part of the Expressive Arts Hub within the school. The members of the hub are Miss Holland (Hub Driver) and Miss Caie (Music Lead) and they oversee the running of the subject within the school. Miss Holland is the Subject Leader for Art.

Art and Design is taught throughout the school in a range of fun and exciting ways. Children are encouraged to express themselves through Art and be able to share and discuss a range of artwork by themselves and others, forming their own opinions about them. Children are given opportunities to explore their ideas by experimenting, inventing and creating their own varied works of art using a range of materials. They will learn how to draw, paint, sculpt and explore other art, craft and design techniques. They become confident when talking about Art and can express their opinions about their own and others work as well as the work of famous artists. Pupils have the opportunity to take part in a range of competitions and to have their work displayed around the school.

Rationale

Art and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. A high-quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art and show an appreciation of the subject. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically, discuss, give preferences, find similarities and differences between both their own work and that of famous artists. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture of our country.

Making It Real

At Birchington Church of England Primary School children have the opportunity to take part in several competitions, on a national and local scale. They have the opportunity to take part in Art clubs and have their work displayed within their year group area and on our School Gallery board. Parents/carers and children are provided with information on our school newsletter about art activities that they make like to visit or participate in. We try to make connections with The Turner Contemporary Centre in Margate and use online resources for other art galleries within lessons.

Art Day

We are looking forward to celebrating an Art Day again this year kicking off with a visit from our local Artist in residence, Mark Mason. Children across the school will get involved in a range of Art activities. This year we will be focussing non the theme of 'Art Movements.' Children will learn about a focus theme, artists that belong to that movement and will then learn the skills the skills they used to create a piece of art for themselves.

MADD week (Music, Art, Dance & Drama)

MADD week is features on our school calendar every 2 years. This is an opportunity for children to immerse themselves in the Arts. A theme is at the centre of MADD and all of the activities link with this theme. In previous years this has been a film, a music decade, classical music, architects & artists.

These wonderful pieces of art were submitted into the Rotary Arts Festival
