RSHE

RSHE Subject Information

At Birchington CEP Primary School we aim to provide all our pupils with a relevant, ambitious and engaging curriculum. RSHE is a cornerstone of this, creating a safe space for children to explore key issues relating to them, others and the wider world in general. Through a varied and exciting curriculum, we aim to help children learn about their place in the world and how they can interact with others and manage challenging situations successfully.

Subject Overview

At our school, children begin learning about RSHE, in an age and developmentally appropriate way, from Reception. In the Early Years, this is covered through their weekly circle time and the Early Years Framework. From Years 1 to 6, children learn RSHE through weekly, discrete lessons and enriching visits from organisations and charity groups. RSHE is led by Mrs Upton. RSHE is part of the Healthy Body, Healthy Mind Hub. An exciting and relevant curriculum utilises many of the resources from a variety of different sources and have been adapted so that it best meets the needs of the children at Birchington.  We aim for children to leave Birchington CE Primary School with a sound understanding of the role they play in the wider world and the confidence to navigate relationships. Our curriculum helps to equip children with the skills to do this.

Rationale

At Birchington Primary School we believe that it is important to focus not only on a child’s academic achievements but also to equip them with the skills, knowledge and qualities for them to thrive in the world outside of school. RSHE allows our children the chance to learn about their place in the wider community and their rights and responsibilities. Through RSHE, children will be empowered to recognise and name their feelings, to develop strategies for dealing with challenges they may encounter through their lives and to know how they can help bring about change. In RSHE, the focus is on the child. The subject is a reflective one with every lesson designed to support the child’s personal development. Covering a broad scope of topics; relationships, health (physical and mental), citizenship, personal skills, financial, the digital world and celebrating individuality, RSHE is a subject which aims to support children’s development into well-rounded members of society who are able to hold high aspirations for themselves and contribute to society whilst living a happy life.
