Equality at Birchington CE Primary School

Equality is an important part of ‘living’ our Christian vision at Birchington CE Primary School. We want everyone in our school community to flourish and feel valued and safe. Following Jesus’ example, we respect, love and care for everyone.

A range of policies and procedures are in place to ensure equality for all and diversity is celebrated at our school.

In October 2010, the Equality Act introduced a Public Sector Equality, which requires schools to have due regard to the need to: -

  • Eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimisation and other conduct prohibited by the Act
  • Advance equality of opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not
  • Foster good relations between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not. (Protected Characteristics - There are nine Protected Characteristics under the Equality Act; Age, Disability, Gender Reassignment, Marriage and Civil Partnership, Pregnancy and Maternity, Race, Religion or Belief, Sex and Sexual Orientation.)

The Equality Duty requires schools to consider how our activities affect the people who share these different protected characteristics and to publish information to show how we do this.

Please see link below:-

The Equality Act 2010 and schools - Departmental advice for school leaders, school staff, governing bodies and local authorities May 2014

In order to meet our Equality Duty, we are required to publish Equality Information about how our policies and practices affect those with Protected Characteristics.

Our Inclusion Leader, Mrs Downs and Ms Bant our Chair of Governors  meet throughout the year to discuss issues and monitor the impact of our work related to equality and accessibility. They report back to the Headteacher and the Governing Body. There are also a range of policies which all staff adhere to and parents and carers accept if their child is a pupil at our school.  When staff complete any new policy or review a  previous one, they complete an Equality Impact Assessment Sheet to ensure all those with protected characteristics have been considered within the creation or review of the new document.

You will find a wide range of information related to equality and diversity throughout our school website. Below are some links that may be useful to you, however, if you have any questions related to this topic, please do not hesitate to contact us.
